The Essex seaside resort of Southend on Sea is situated on the Northern side of the Thames estuary and is home to around 150,000 inhabitants.
With nearly six miles of beach and a huge number of amusement arcades, not to mention the town's famous pier that stretches a mile and a half out to sea and features its own railway to take visitors along its length, Southend is a haven for tourists looking for a taste of a traditional English seaside day out.
Every summer the town hosts the Southend Carnival along its Golden Mile which starts with the ceremonial switching on of the Southend Illuminations.
Along the town's bustling seafront are many varied attractions, one of the most visited of which is the large Adventure Island theme park that lies at the entrance to the pier. With over fifty rides including four rollercoasters on offer, Adventure Island is popular with adults and children alike.
